Kerala is a world of ethnic culture, traditions and festivities. In Kerala, Vishu is one of the important festivals celebrated with pride and love. Vishu is a harvest festival or the Malayalam new year in Kerala. It is celebrated on the 14th of April every year.
Vishu brings in a lot of childhood memories for our beloved family of Samraksha. It is the time when all the cousins gather at the ancestral home for vacation. They rise early and their first sight is the Vishu Kani lovingly prepared by their grandparents. The elderly person in the house lights up the lamp at dawn and blindfolds each member to open their eyes to see the lamp first. Everyone eagerly waits for the elders to offer them Vishukaineetam that they save up in their piggy banks.
Activities for Seniors During Vishu
Vishu Kanni
Vishu Kanni is an extremely significant part of the festival. The Kanni is a display of fruit, Kannikonna and vegetables with gold coins. These represent the happiness & prosperity the family will get for the rest of the year. It is believed the first thing you see on Vishu morning is what you will get throughout the year. Organize a Vishu Kanni for the inmates of the retirement homes in Kochi. Let them rewind their childhood memories and welcome happiness, good health and peace for the year ahead.
Vishukkaineetam
Normally the eldest family member is the one who hands out Vishukkaineetam or coins to the family members, It is a token of blessing from the elders. For a change offer our inmates Vishukkaineetam and make them feel close to the spirit of Vishu.
Vishu Sadya
No festival is complete without a feast. Organize a Vishu Sadya(feast) for the senior family at senior care homes in Kolenchery.
Down the Memory Lane
Organize a storytelling session for the seniors to share their childhood experience of the Vishu festival. Let them recount their childhood memories and feel revived with energy and happiness. Happy memories have the power to uplift human minds.
Let us celebrate this Visu with the hopes of new opportunities, healthy and peaceful life ahead. Happy Vishu!
